I’m judging this one…

You know that post about not judging a book by its cover? Well, I am completely judging this one. I attended a webinar that presents upcoming YA novels from publishers. Most are the typical fare. Romance, contemporary, Game of Thrones wanna be’s, and the never dying dystopia. It’s not that I hate the dystopian genre but it is going the way of Vampires and Werewolves. Even some of the teens are getting tired of it. How many messed up worlds can we visit people?

So, when this one was mentioned I honestly had the following reaction:

Presenting: Hungry by H.A. Swain

In the future, food is no longer necessary—until Thalia begins to feel something unfamiliar and uncomfortable. She’s hungry.

In Thalia’s world, there is no need for food—everyone takes medication (or “inocs”) to ward off hunger. It should mean there is no more famine, no more obesity, no more food-related illnesses, and no more war. At least that’s what her parents, who work for the company that developed the inocs, say. But when Thalia meets a boy who is part of an underground movement to bring food back, she realizes that most people live a life much different from hers. Worse, Thalia is starting to feel hunger, and so is he—the inocs aren’t working. Together they set out to find the only thing that will quell their hunger: real food.

H. A. Swain delivers an adventure that is both epic and fast-paced. Get ready to be Hungry.

(Goodreads- Cover description)

Really??? Hungry?? I sincerely hope this is a parody of sorts because I will never be able to take this one seriously or book talk it with a straight face to the teens. It has received mixed reviews across the blogging world and on Goodreads. The characters names are  food related which is a bit too cliche for me. Maybe I am being too hard on this novel. (I doubt it) Maybe it’s an okay read. (again so much doubt) Once it is released I will be giving it the ol’ 5 chapter try. It is a unique idea. I just don’t really believe that wars can be stopped over hunger. Has anyone gotten a pre-release of this one? I would love to hear the good and bad if you have read it.

Sounds interesting…and I agree. Hunger? Really? At least be a bit more creative!

They are scraping the bottom of the barrel with new dystopian ideas I fear! We have already had one about water and another about air. I guess this shouldn’t surprise me!
